Book Review: Graphic Design Visionaries.


Graphic Design Visionaries is a book by journalist and graphic art editor Caroline Roberts, it was published in June, 2015 by Laurence King, one of my favorite publishers.. The book features 75 of the world’s most famous and influential designers that broke new grounds in the field from 1885 to 1992, artists are sorted in the book via year they were born. Some of the designers featured are actually Graphic Design studios, like Pentagram, The Designers Republic, and Hipgnosis.

When I first ordered my copy I didn’t expect mush of it and wasn’t so sure if I’d like it, I ordered it with other books cause it was suggested to me more than once and totally forgot about till I received my order. And I was impressed, for one, I didn’t think it would be that big, it’s 312 pages, 20.3 x 2.5 x 29.2 cm  where each designer’s featured in 4 pages. Paper quality is amazing, the layout is clear and nice, with lots and lots of inspiration, also pictures of the actual artist is there next to their work! Something that to be honest almost all history books lack. I totally loved this book, very informative aside from being and absolute eye candy. I will include lots of high resolution pictures in this review so you’d have a better idea what it’s all about. Do I recommend it? Definitely.

New Media Art is the Future.

I have been following the work of some great artists online who make stunning pieces of art ranging from visual  and media art, to light or sound illustrations, video mapping and audio-visual, so I thought of sharing some of my favorite projects for them.


• Kyle McDonald — Light Leaks.

A scattered array of fifty mirror balls reflect light from three projectors, filling a room completely with small reflections, casting patterns that fill the visitor’s peripheral vision. Creating a curious space that alternates between a meditative state, and an uneasy imbalance. An experiment in combining a found object with computer vision to create a profound and unusual experience.

•YCAM InterLap — mapamok.

An incredible video-mapping experiment done using built with open-frameworks.

マパモク / mapamok is an experimental projection mapping application that is part of the Projector Camera Toolkit developed during Guest Research Project v.1 at YCAM Interlab.

This video demonstrates a workflow for fast projection mapping involving: measuring and modelling the scene (5-30 minutes) followed by installing and calibrating the projector (5 minutes).

Because mapamok is built with openFrameworks, everything is rendered in realtime. This allows for the technique to easily be extended to interactive applications. Near the end, an example of an interactive sound+visual mapping is shown.

•Kyle Evans —  Transmission Archaeology.

Digital visual piece done with video transmission and algorithmic computer composition with beautiful electronic sounds.



•Nicolas Bernier — Frequencies (Light Quanta).

A structure is generating tridimensional patterns superimposing 100 transparent laser cut acrylic panels. Each acrylic panels is engraved with vectorial graphics inspired by quantum physics. The panels are edge lit and individually controlled by a computer-based algorithm allowing to create random physical animations by turning each panels on/off while syncing them with short sound bursts. This metaphorically cinematic method allow to freeze and combine every single frames of the100 available, creating a multidimensional visualization method.


•Refik Anadol — Infinity Room.

Infinity’ is an immersive environment project by Refik Anadol. Project is an integral part of artist’s ongoing ‘Temporary Immersive Environment Experiments’ which is a research on audio/visual installations by using the state called immersion which is the state of consciousness where an immersant’s awareness of physical self is transformed by being surrounded in an engrossing environment; often artificial, creating a perception of presence in a non-physical world.

Light is the major element in the experiment, used to blur and interconnect the boundaries between the two realms actual/fictional and physical/virtual. It signifies the threshold between the simulacrum space created by the projection technology, and the physical space where the viewer stands. The experiments will discuss the inherent spatial qualities of immersive virtual environments and their effect on the embodied person.
